Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia, is globally recognized as one of the most iconic coffee-growing regions and is often considered part of the birthplace of Arabica coffee. Located in the Gedeo Zone in southern Ethiopia, the region sits at elevations ranging from 1,600 to 2,400 meters above sea level. Here, thousands of smallholder farmers cultivate indigenous heirloom varieties using traditional, eco-friendly methods passed down through generations. These coffees are typically hand-harvested, washed using fresh spring water, and dried on raised beds. Yirgacheffe’s coffee is protected as a trademarked origin and continues to play a central role in Ethiopia’s specialty coffee identity.

Memitu Coffee Plantation is a small, dedicated farm nestled within this renowned region. Like many farms in Yirgacheffe, Memitu practices sustainable agriculture—using organic inputs, shade-grown techniques, and careful processing methods that align with local traditions. While smaller in scale, Memitu contributes to the region’s reputation for producing high-quality coffees through its commitment to responsible farming and consistency. Supported by local cooperatives and Ethiopia’s growing investment in coffee research and infrastructure, farms like Memitu help preserve Yirgacheffe’s legacy while reaching international markets.
